Scientists Solve 30-Year-Old Aurora Borealis Mystery
UCLA scientists and colleagues have identified the mechanism that triggers substorms in space; wreaks havoc on satellites, power grids and communications systems; and leads to the explosive release of energy that causes the spectacular brightening of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.

The lives of three Los Angeles-area kidney transplant patients were transformed by the West Coast's first three-way living-donor kidney transplant chain, made possible through the generosity of a non-directed, altruistic kidney donor from New York City.

UCLA Alumna Named Poet Laureate of U.S.
With poetry's lofty reputation, the uninitiated might think that humor and poetry overlap only in dirty limericks. But for Kay Ryan '67, M.A. '68, who was named poet laureate of the United States on July 17, "much of the best poetry is funny."
